Sarawak 4th Poorest State - DAP

Petrajaya: Politik Baru*Budaya Baru

Kuching – Sarawak deserves better than just being the 4th poorest state in Malaysia and it is us who should make Sarawak a better place for us and our future generations, said DAP Sarawak Chairman, Wong Ho Leng in the 15th DAP State Annual convention.
“The BN has not delivered after 47 years. It has to be replaced. There is one furmula to topple the BN government and that is Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.
Unity is strength. We are confident that we can do it in the State election that must be called within the next few months.
Throwing a challenge to BN, he said, it is a do or die State election. The Sarawak BN is so afraid of losing power in Sarawak that it may decide to hold the State election concurrently with the Parliamentary election.
Wong also feared that the BN led by the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is in no comfort zone either in the next Parliamentary and state elections, it will likely be the dirtiest elections ever.
Saying that the people in Sarawak are suffering with prices of all commodities increased under the Barisan Nasional Government. Even the SUPP leaders have to resort to signing Petition to inform the Prime Minister its objection to BN – “Barang Naik”. It is a classic case of the SUPP not knowing that it is in the Government and that it is the Government that has inflicted so much sorrow and hardship on its people.
He pointed out that even though it is the BN’s “fixed deposit” state, Sarawak has been marginalised by the federal government. “This is unacceptable. Under the Federal Budget of 2011, RM109.74 billion worth of mega projects will be built in West Malaysia. Sarawak and Sabah share a mere RM9.55 billion worth of the projects. That is only 8% from the total value of projects cited in the Federal Budget.” he added.
He said the BN has vowed to remain in Putrajaya at all costs. The BN contests to win the next election so that they can stay in power, but they will not wean out corruption, and they will continue to neglect Sarawak.
Calling for a uniifed front, he said DAP and the Pakatan Rakyat must seize power from Putrajaya. to win, not for ourselves but for our future generations. Malaysians deserve a better life.
In order to win Putrajaya, we have a duty to ensure that Sarawak will not continue to be another BN’s “Fixed Deposit” state.
DAP and Pakatan Rakyat partners must also win to form the Government in Sarawak to send the message to the BN that Enough is enough.
Wong revealed that Sarawak boasts an income of RM3.9 Billion and has the largest land mass in Malaysia with abundant resources. “We ought to be the richest state but we are not. Our roads and infrastructures are 20 years behind Peninsular Malaysia,” he wondered.
“Sarawak is 120 times bigger than Penang. The PR state of Penang has revenue of RM900 million. Yet, Penang is able to implement a people friendly Government. It can do so because the Penang Government is corruption free. Sarawak Government leaders have been riddled with accusations of corruption, nepotism and cronyism. We deserve better for our future generation,” he said.
There is lack of job and business opportunities in Sarawak. Sarawakians are leaving the state in droves, to enrich and empower other states, only because they have no confidence in the BN Government.
We have to wrest brain drain from Sarawak. We have to save the NCR land from being taken or exploited by the rich and well connected. We have to preserve our resources for our future generations.
“We have to stand together with PR. PR has instilled fear in the BN to lose power. That is why they have resorted to suspension of Opposition Members from the Dewan Undangan Negeri. They spent time to prepare the White Papers with a view to stop Pakatan Rakyat’s political leaders from West Malaysia to come to Sarawak. They resorted to restrain longhouse folks from accepting Opposition politicians. They restrict freedom of speech.,” he said.
Asking all to rise above the obstacles, he said they have a noble mission to achieve and DAP must take the lead.
